Film Name:奪命金 / Life Without Principle / Dyut meng gam

《Life Without Principle》 is a very mixed film, with murder, robbery, gangster, fund purchase and property purchase issues, a multi-stranded narrative and black humour. The three-part narrative is not new, Ren Xianqi’s part is tense and serious; He Yunshi’s part is still serious, except for Su Xingxuan’s part of buying a fund, which is a bit funny, but it is still relatively normal; the most derailed is the part of Lau Ching-Wan, which is also the most black humour and most hilarious, with scruffy attire, a three-legged panther, and a bulging eye that keeps winking, and a three-legged leopard. Winking three-legged leopard, as well as the convex-eyed dragon hot Sam these enough jianghu gas enough to dominate the name, an old man, the more serious the more people want to laugh.

There’s no gunfighting scenes, no ritualistic gangster scenes, no psychotic genius detective, no layered narrative, no blood-boiling gore and violence, and no intellectual combat scenes. This time, 《Life Without Principle》 returns to reality, closer to life, writing about ordinary citizens buying funds and properties, with the European debt crisis as the trigger point, linking the three stories together, a down-to-earth approach to ordinary stories, but still let people watch the tension. With the excellent use of black humour, it made the audience laugh several times. The use of black humour here was extremely well done. There were two very impressive segments. The best part was when the Bulgeye Dragon and the Three-Legged Leopard were buying futures, calling “up” and “down” at the same time, and then one of the Bulgeye Dragons spat out blood and died, and the other one spat out blood! The whole audience laughed! Is there such a thing as a spoof? It’s amazing that we can laugh so much while watching people die! There’s also a part where Juan buys a fund, and he keeps saying “I know what I’m talking about”, which makes him look like a typical milkmaid who is cautious about her investments but eager for a high return.

There are a lot of details in 《Life Without Principle》 that are worth savouring. The supporting cast is well chosen, with the aforementioned Su Xingxuan as the prudent teacher’s wife, Juan, and Lu Haipeng as Uncle Yuan, who is cunning in a lewd way, and who perfectly conveys the feeling of “ginger is still hotter than old age”. And there’s also Sam Wong Yat-wah as the fiery Sam, who, like the Jing brother of the past, now lives a life of selling cardboard, but carries a lot of cash with him every day, and in the end gives almost all the cash to the three-legged panther, leaving only a little bit of change for himself, which is definitely a performance of that kind of sentimentality and righteousness. Also, the soundtrack of the film is outstanding. The soundtrack is like 《Sparrow》 on top, a very emotional and light-hearted soundtrack, and when used over a tragedy, it’s even more ironic and humorous.
