Film Name:唐伯虎点秋香 / Flirting Scholar

《Flirting Scholar》 is a film that blends elements of comedy and romance. Its English title, Flirting Scholar, reflects the personality traits of its protagonist, Tong Pak Fu. The film’s story idea, script writing and camera language are all top-notch, showcasing the love story between Tong Pak Fu and Chou Heung.

The story begins when Tong Pak Fu is in a difficult situation, with many concubines who are all good gamblers and no one appreciates his talent. Tong Pak Fu stumbles upon Chou-heung, a maid in the Wah Mansion, and decides to pursue her. Tong Pak Fu sells himself short and works as a servant in the Wah Mansion, and gradually rises through the ranks with his superb painting skills. However, when he sets out to save the house, his identity is revealed and he is obstructed by Madam Hua. In the end, Tong Pak Fu defeats the life-threatening scholar to seek revenge and marries Chou-heung.

The film is very well acted by Stephen Chow, but the characterisation is a bit awkward, as Tong Pak Fu’s identity as a great writer has been assumed. Nonetheless, the film’s story structure and character development remain fascinating. Chou-heung represents an intellectual woman of the new era, who is knowledgeable, literate and not bound by traditional customs. However, the film reveals at the end that Chou-heung’s character is no different from others, which reflects the double standard of some people in society, i.e. ostensibly boasting of their high knowledge and literacy, but in fact wearing a mask of hypocrisy.

Overall, 《Flirting Scholar》 is a film full of comedic elements and profound social allegory. Through the story of Tong Pak Fu and Chou-heung, the film explores the gap between ideals and reality, the relationship between social status and personal values, and equality and respect in love.
