Film Name:神探 / Mad Detective

《Mad Detective》 is a crime drama film co-directed by Johnnie To and Wai Ka Fai, with a screenplay by Wai Ka Fai and Au Kin Yee, and starring Lau Ching Wan, Jacky On  and Gordon Lam. The film premiered as the grand finale at the 64th Venice International Film Festival on 5 September 2007 and was released in Hong Kong, China on 29 November of the same year. The film tells the story of Chan Kwai-bun, a schizophrenic retired policeman who is entrusted with a stolen gun case. Chan possesses a special ability to recognise the “ghosts” within others, which leads him to be considered insane, and as a result, he loses his job as a police officer. The film’s sophisticated design incorporates just the right amount of black violence, which is not uncomfortable but still penetrates the viewer’s heart. The main story line of the film is simple, but through the director’s precise grasp and mirroring arrangement, all the clues in the chaotic mess become well organised and do not dazzle the viewer.

The film’s story design borrows the concept of “multiple personalities”, but unlike Hollywood’s 《Identity》, its presentation of schizophrenia is different. 《Mad Detective》 is a profound dissection of human greed and sin, similar to the “Seven Deadly Sins” in which desire drives an ethereal shell, making people think about the distinction between good and evil while watching.
