《Return to the 36th Chamber》 is a classic kung fu film directed by Lau Kar Leung  and starring Lau Kar Fai  and Wong Lung Wai. The film tells the legendary story of an ordinary man named Renjie, who goes to Shaolin to learn kung fu in order to do justice and fight for the rights of the workers. Through the experience of Renjie, the film shows how an ordinary man with courage and perseverance, through study and practice, eventually becomes a kung fu master to bring justice to the underdog.

The film takes place in a dyeing factory in Guangdong, where Jen Kit decides to learn martial arts in order to help the workers fight against injustice. When the owner of the dye house reveals his fake identity, Jen Kit is exposed and beaten up. Subsequently, Ren Jie is expelled from the Shaolin Temple. However, after returning to the dye house, Ren Jie finds that the life of the workers has not improved, but has become more difficult. After much hard work, Jen finally defeats the bullies in the dye house and fights for the workers’ rights, earning him the reputation of “Return to the 36th Chamber”.

The film’s martial arts design is creative and the action scenes are spectacular. Lau Ka Fai’s performance is excellent and his action and humour add a lot of colour to the film. The atmosphere of the film is light-hearted and witty, full of comedic elements. Director Lau Kar-leung is also recognised for his creativity, combining scaffolding with martial arts to create a unique “kung fu” scene.
