《Who’s The Suspect》 is a commercial suspense/crime film set in a country in Southeast Asia, namely Penang. The film tells the story of a Chinese gold medal lawyer, Chan Chi Kei , whose daughter is kidnapped at a school sports day. The kidnappers demand that Chan Chi Kei plead not guilty to a death row inmate named Dan Wen in 5 days as a condition for rescuing her daughter. The suspense of the film lies in the fact that Dan Wen’s alleged murder case has been ruled ironclad, and how Chan Chi Ki will overturn the case in order to save her daughter. The film has several suspenseful subplots, including who kidnapped Chan Chi Ki’s daughter, who is going to save Dan Wen, and who the real killer is.
The strength of the film is that there is a great sense of suspense, the story is complete and the audience will keep guessing the truth as they watch. However, the film’s flaws are also evident in the fact that there are too many breaks and cuts from story line to story line, and a poor sense of organisation and pacing. After explaining the premise, the film quickly moves on to the main thread of Chen Zhiqi’s quest to overturn Dan Wen’s conviction, and the main thread of tracking down his daughter’s clues is a slapdash scribble. In addition, the film’s late reversal after reversal, completely for the sake of reversal for reversal, this kind of similar reversal consecutively appeared, each time in the seemingly desperate situation suddenly changed a life-saving ladder out to let a person climb, see more and more will be numb.
