All these questions are themes explored by Hong Kong director Chan Kwok Fai in his latest work 《Twelve days》.
《Twelve days》 is a full-fledged women’s movie with a story told entirely from a woman’s point of view. In 12 chapters, the movie tells the story of a couple’s journey from marriage to divorce in life details. The lead actors, Lydia Tang and Ma Zhiwei, play both sides of the couple, who were in love before they got married, but found out their incompatibility and conflicts after marriage. Teresa Teng plays the female lead, who is under a lot of pressure and aggravation in the marriage. She not only has to take care of her family and children, but also has to put up with her husband’s coldness and cheating. The male lead, played by Ma Zhiwei, on the other hand, is a career-oriented and selfish man who does not know how to be considerate and caring to his wife. He thinks that his earning money to support the family is the biggest contribution to his wife, and ignores her feelings and expectations for him.
The movie shows various scenes of quarrels, cold war, reconciliation, separation and divorce between husband and wife in a realistic and delicate way. Instead of deliberately rendering sadness or sensationalism, the movie expresses the dilemmas and struggles faced by women in marriage in plain but profound language. The film also does not portray men as demons or villains, but rather analyzes the thinking and behavioral patterns of men in a patriarchal society from an objective and rational perspective.
