All’s Well, Ends Well 1992 Film Review: If I had to choose my all-time favorite movie, I’d pick this one.

Film Name: 家有喜事 / All’s Well, Ends Well / Family Happiness / 家有囍事

People sometimes like to set themselves challenges, like choosing their favorite movie of all time. If I had to pick one, it would be the 1992 version of “All’s Well, Ends Well.”

I once saw an interview with Cheung Tat-ming where he said comedy’s strength lies in its ability to produce great films at low cost, but its limitation is its inability to transcend regional boundaries. I wholeheartedly agree. Deep down, I’ve always felt that those unfamiliar with Cantonese can never fully grasp the jokes in Stephen Chow’s films—many of the laughs simply can’t be conveyed through translation alone. “All’s Well, Ends Well” may not have won major awards or been considered highbrow, but it has stayed with me for over a decade. My friends and I often blurt out lines from it, laughing ourselves silly before adopting them as catchphrases.

Gu Dechao noted that a single brilliant idea in a comedy can make audiences “clap until their hands hurt”—an effect sci-fi films might spend hundreds of millions to achieve.

In any era, a truly great comedian is rare. In the 1992 version of “All’s Well, Ends Well,” every character—from leads to supporting roles—delivered peak comedic performance. Even now, the acting by Sandra Ng, Mao Mao, Stephen Chow, and others often moves me deeply. Achieving such a wealth of laugh-out-loud moments and genuinely infectious scenes is incredibly difficult. Both Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung went on to become highly acclaimed figures in the film industry, rarely appearing in such slapstick comedies afterward. Yet their performances in “All’s Well, Ends Well” hold their own against any other roles they’ve portrayed.

Even now, “All’s Well, Ends Well” on television. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it, but I feel like I could recite the entire script by heart. There are simply too many classic scenes—every single clip is iconic. I’ve seen countless films since then, but none has left such a lasting impression on me as All’s Well, Ends Well. No other movie deserves the title of my all-time favorite more than this one.
