Film Name: 壞蛋聯盟2 / The Bad Guys 2

I went to see the newly released animated film “The Bad Guys 2” over the weekend, and overall, it was pretty good.

Coincidentally, there have been quite a few excellent domestic animated films released this year, such as “Ne Zha,” “Luo Xiaohei Zhan Ji 2,” and “Lang Lang Shan Xiao Yao Guai.” I’ll share some of my thoughts on them.

Without delving into technical aspects, when it comes to storytelling and thematic depth, compared to domestic animated films that consistently aim to “convey a message,” Hollywood animations like the “Bad Guys” series stand out for their pure entertainment value.

This isn’t to say that their animations lack depth—*The Bad Guys 2* doesn’t represent the entire genre—but within the current trend of Hollywood commercial films, works like *The Bad Guys 2* that prioritize “experience over expression” are indeed quite typical.

Personally, I prefer the first *Bad Guys* film. Though the story of villains reforming is a cliché, the characters like the Big Bad Wolf, Greedy Snake, Beautiful Belly Shark, piranha, and hacker spider are particularly cool when they commit crimes. This is also one of the reasons I often enjoy American works: they are truly passionate and skilled at creating villains (whether genuinely evil or inherently good), and they don’t carry unnecessary baggage.

“The Bad Guys 2” tells the story of the protagonists’ difficult life after reforming and reintegrating into society, only to be framed and forced back into the criminal underworld. While the plot is equally formulaic, the focus on “reforming their ways” reduces the thrill of their criminal activities.

However, “The Bad Guys 2” finds new sources of humor elsewhere, so the overall comedic effect remains intact.

For example, the greedy snake, who was most reluctant to let go of his villainous identity in the first film, becomes the most carefree character in the second. The reason? He’s fallen in love—with the sharp-tongued crow, who was actually there to set a trap for the villain alliance (no surprise there). But when the greedy snake discovers the truth, he doesn’t get angry; instead, he grows even more fond of her because she’s “too wicked, too cunning,” and he seizes every opportunity to declare his love.

You could say he’s still a villain, but he’s become harmless. You could say he’s a good guy, but he’s so obsessed with evil… This approach of making clever changes without altering the original setting is both smart and charming.

But as I mentioned earlier, “The Bad Guys 2″s greatest trait is its “pure entertainment value,” which is both a strength and a weakness.

The advantages speak for themselves: vibrant characters, clever crime plots, fast-paced transitions, heartfelt homages to classics, and more—this time, it’s all been taken to the next level, making it absolutely fun, thrilling, and lively.

The downside is that you can’t overthink anything; you have to let your eyes take the lead instead of your brain, or else you’ll start to feel uneasy.

Whether it’s the Villain Alliance or the Ghost Thief, they’re not inherently evil; they’re more like reckless thrill-seekers who hate constraints. “The loot isn’t the point; what matters is that I can do it/I’m capable,” this is the foundation of the “Bad Guys” comedy—the only truly evil character is the psychologically twisted Kitty Panther, who mistakes others’ fear of her for respect.

The issue arises when the Big Bad Wolf, who had previously wavered for no apparent reason, suddenly becomes steadfast in his goodness and even lectures Kitty Panther on “earning respect.” This is a poorly handled critical turning point.

Additionally, “The Bad Guys 2” also glosses over the struggles of reformed criminals or those released from prison. Whether it’s the alliance members who can’t find a decent job or Diane Fox, whose “Blood Red Claw” identity is exposed, after causing a commotion in the film, they are all arranged to fake their deaths and then go on to become interstellar agents.

So, it’s an entertainment film, and as long as it’s lively and fun, that’s enough. If you take it too seriously, you’ll just come across as rude… Whether or not to take it seriously is up to the audience.

For me, “The Bad Guys 2” is definitely worth watching for its entertainment value, but the rest is a matter of opinion.
