Project A II 1987 Film Review: Evil cannot prevail over good: To forge iron, one must be strong oneself.

Film Name: A计划续集 / Project A II / Project A 2 / A計劃續集

This film covers a wide range of factions: Hong Kong police officers Ma Rulong and Zhen Sanhuan, pitting good cops against bad cops; the revolutionary party representing emerging forces; the Qing court’s elite martial artists opposing them; and the remnants of pirates whose hideout was destroyed by Ma Rulong. It’s quite intriguing.

The pursuit of West Ring’s notorious gangster, Gou Xintiger. Representing Hong Kong’s police force are Ma Rulong and Zhen Sanhuan. Ma Rulong leads by example—uncorrupted and dedicated to combating organized crime, earning him outstanding recognition. Zhen Sanhuan, however, abuses his authority to collude with criminal syndicates, lining his pockets through illicit gains. To counter Zhen Sanhuan, Ma Rulong is appointed head of West Ring. From that moment, a bitter rivalry ignites between the two. Ma Rulong was determined to apprehend criminal forces, with West Ring bully Gou Xintiger as his primary target. Lacking authority and facing resistance from his subordinates, he led his trusted men to arrest Gou Xintiger. After a fierce struggle, Gou Xintiger captured Ma Rulong and his team. Fortunately, reinforcements arrived in time, and Gou Xintiger and his gang were apprehended. Ma Rulong, a proud man, witnessed Gou Xintiger’s defiance despite being outnumbered. He challenged Gou Xintiger and his men to a fight, vowing to keep beating them until both were pinned to the ground.

Security for the Police Superintendent’s Daughter’s Birthday Banquet. The crucial moment arrived: the birthday banquet for the Police Superintendent’s daughter drew dignitaries and prominent figures from all walks of Hong Kong society. Zhen Sanhuan struck a deal with the revolutionaries: they would steal the expensive diamond gift the superintendent intended for his daughter during the banquet, framing Ma Rulong for the theft to get him dismissed and investigated. The revolutionaries executed their plan as scheduled. Despite Ma Rulong’s caution, he fell into the trap and was framed. Under Zhen Sanhuan’s cover-up, Ma failed to apprehend the revolutionaries.

A fierce battle erupted at Yingying’s home between various factions. Zhen Sanhuan colluded with a Qing prince to secretly arrest revolutionaries. The Qing prince dispatched imperial guards to capture Shanshan, Yingying’s cousin and a revolutionary. Imperial guards secretly entered Yingying’s home, taking her cousin away. The revolutionary leader also arrived at Yingying’s residence, as did Ma Rulong and his men. The Inspector, who had met Yingying at the birthday banquet, also came to her house. Finally, Zhen Sanhuan made his appearance, arriving at Yingying’s home only to be sent away by her. Upon discovering the situation, Ma Rulong swiftly subdued the imperial guards and rescued his cousin Shanshan.

All factions clashed in chaotic battle. Zhen Sanhuan devised another scheme, secretly ordering the prison warden to kill Ma Rulong. The warden dispatched his men to capture Ma Rulong and threw him into the river, intending to drown him. Fortunately, revolutionaries discovered him and rescued him. Ma Rulong and the revolutionaries buried the hatchet. Just then, the Prince arrived with imperial guards to arrest the revolutionaries. Ma Rulong stepped forward. Zhen Sanhuan and the Prince worked together to capture Ma Rulong and his companions. Ma Rulong and the revolutionaries fought desperately to escape for their lives. After several confrontations, the pirate remnants and Ma Rulong buried the hatchet and instead aided him against the imperial guards. Hong Kong police eventually arrived, rounding up the entire group. Ma Rulong also succeeded in capturing Zhen Sanhuan.

The lessons I learned from Ma Rulong’s story:

Lesson One: Uphold your principles and maintain integrity. Refusing corruption was Ma Rulong’s unwavering stance. In a corrupt bureaucracy, such individuals face immense challenges. By steadfastly adhering to his principles, Ma Rulong earned the trust of his superiors.

Lesson Two: If you don’t want others to know, don’t do it yourself. Zhen Sanhuan thought he was clever, lining his own pockets, but his superiors knew all along. Violating discipline and breaking the law will always lead to punishment.

Lesson Three: Strengthen your own capabilities. For someone like Ma Rulong to survive in Hong Kong’s high-security environment and thrive is no easy feat. The most crucial thing is to be strong enough to withstand any challenge.
