Film Name: 黄飞鸿之铁鸡斗蜈蚣 / Last Hero in China / Deadly China Hero / Claws of Steel / Iron Rooster Vs. Centipede / 黃飛鴻之鐵雞鬥蜈蚣

“Last Hero in China” stands as the sole comedy among the five Wong Fei-hung series films starring Jet Li. While Jet Li’s portrayal of Wong Fei-hung continues the consistent, mature demeanor of a master deeply concerned for his country and its people, most other actors primarily deliver comedic relief through slapstick and humor. This effectively achieves the complementary blend of seriousness and humor that director Wong Jing excels at.
The action sequences remain the responsibility of the Yuen Unit, guaranteeing the spectacle’s visual appeal. Here, the golden partnership between Jet Li and Yuen Woo-ping deserves special mention. Since their collaboration began with the first Wong Fei-hung film, “Top Gun,” nearly every action sequence from their subsequent films has been enshrined as a classic in action cinema history. Jet Li’s drunken boxing sequence in the finale stands out as uniquely distinctive—graceful yet resolute, fluid yet powerful. The sudden appearance of the comically sprawled Alan Tam at the end brings the film squarely back into Wong Jing’s signature comedic mode.
Overall, this film delivers pure entertainment value. However, compared to the first three Wong Fei-hung installments, it completely loses the profound thematic essence that creator Tsui Hark consistently explored throughout the series. Therefore, it simply cannot be compared to its predecessors.
