Film Name: 开心鬼救开心鬼 / Happy Ghost IV / 開心鬼救開心鬼

The movies I watched as a child, because they hold childhood memories, I recently watched them again. Back then, I didn’t know Beyond, but the songs in the film, “Like You” and “Really Love You,” truly left a deep impression on me. Watching Beyond now, they seem so young and inexperienced back then. Yet I myself am no longer young.

Yuen Kit-ying is beautiful!
The biggest draw of this film is undoubtedly Beyond’s appearance and its continuation of the Happy Ghost series. 1990 was the peak of Beyond’s popularity—they dominated that year’s music awards, and the film clearly embraced this rising force. Beyond’s performance in the movie was solid, not spectacular but earnest! This film also provides invaluable archival footage for later-generation Beyond fans who weren’t around back then. Beyond’s scenes pursuing girls are particularly entertaining. Their entrance involves strutting coolly in the school cafeteria to attract the Happy Girls group—featuring Yuan Jieying, Li Lizen, and Luo Meimei (Jacky Cheung’s wife)—all of whom left indelible marks on Hong Kong cinema. They were at the peak of their youthful beauty then. Though their screen time is limited, they still leave a lasting impression. The beach scene where Beyond is pranked is particularly amusing. Beyond serves as pivotal characters in the plot, as it’s their retrieval of the armor that draws the General Ghost’s wrath upon Kang Xian-gui and his girlfriend, propelling the story forward.

Of course, discussing Happy Ghost inevitably brings up Raymond Wong. Hong Kong ghost and zombie films were all the rage in the 80s, but Wong Bak-ming carved his own niche by injecting comedy into the genre, creating his signature style. The Happy Ghost series was indeed a huge hit! This character, dressed in Qing dynasty official attire, became a beloved figure among the youth of that era. The final showdown with the General Ghost in the film was also spectacular. Summoning a tiger and Wu Song? That was some seriously wild imagination. Of course, comedy filmmakers often need such wild imaginations.
Today’s youth might not feel the same connection watching it now—after all, each generation has different values. But every era has its own memories. We don’t dwell on the past; we cherish the joy and emotion that belonged to us back then!
We love something because we’ve invested our emotions in it. Happy Ghost may be outdated, but that sense of wonder lives on forever in our hearts!
