Future Cops 1993 Film Review: Who doesn’t love Chiu Shu-ching?

Film Name: 超级学校霸王 / Future Cops / 超級學校霸王

Watching another film older than I am, I couldn’t help but sigh at how Hong Kong cinema’s golden age has faded away. Some scenes still linger in my memory—like Jacky Cheung’s iconic swept-back hair, Chiu Shu-ching’s Chun-Li look, and Eric Tsang’s transformation into Sun Wukong. Looking back now, those classic moments feel like fleeting spring dreams, leaving no trace behind. The film’s star-studded cast was nothing short of legendary—point at any actor, and you’d find an ace or superstar. Among the men, three of the Four Heavenly Kings were present: Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, and Jacky Cheung, alongside Michael Zhang, Andy Hui, Ekin Cheng, and Simon Yam. The women were equally dazzling, featuring the peerless Chiu Shu-ching, Yang Tsai-ni, Liu Xiao-hui, and Yuen King-tan. Regardless of the film’s quality, just consider the star power alone. Try pulling off something like this with Wong Jing today? Probably only The Founding of a Republic or The Founding of the Party could muster such a lineup.

Adapting 90s arcade games for the big screen was a brilliant idea back then—truly forward-thinking. Of course, game adaptations are now a dime a dozen, with titles like Warcraft and Resident Evil losing their novelty. Also, hold off on mocking the five-cent special effects. Times have changed—you can’t judge it by 21st-century high-tech standards. For its era, it was a sincere effort. Sure, some might call it trashy, but dude, when watching a comedy, just chill. Laugh for two hours, feel good, mission accomplished.

Since I watched the Mandarin version, the moment Jacky Cheung opened his mouth, a wave of familiarity washed over me. No doubt about it—his voice actor was Stonefish, Stephen Chow’s go-to dubbing artist. For some reason, Director Wong loved teasing Stephen throughout the film. Chiu Shu-ching kept four turtles: Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and Stephen Chow. When one turtle went missing, she declared that Brother Star was secretly dating Autumn Fragrance. Yuen King-tan, playing the spiritual mentor, delivered the line “How beautiful the world is, how fresh the air” with that sweet BGM, and it didn’t feel preachy at all. It shares the same clever twist as the line “The world is so wonderful, yet I’m so irritable” from The Legend of Zu. Jacky Cheung’s costume is unforgettable—a true self-deprecating god of song. His rendition of “Good Mourning” takes an unexpected turn, catching you off guard and instantly earning a spot on your playlist. After watching “Once a Thief,” I added Leslie Cheung’s “Feng Ji Xu Chui”—old movies offer endless rewards. This is how girls might fall head over heels at first sight—spending an entire lifetime with their beloved in their imagination. The scenes of lovers and ghostly romances, while parodying the original, leave you with a lingering aftertaste. Speaking of parody, when Jack was on the brink of death, the beauty’s kiss instantly restored his health and mana, reviving him on the spot—pretty hilarious.

Finally, let’s get back on topic and talk about Chiu Shu-ching. She’s not the demure, elegant type like Yang Tsai-ni. She carries a playful charm while also being fiercely sexy. Every outfit she wears in the show suits her perfectly—even a simple school uniform looks better on her than anyone else. When she puts on glasses, she utterly captivates everyone. After entering the Super Mario game, she removes her hat to reveal flowing red hair and a crimson dress—a look that perfectly mirrors a scene from God of Gamblers. Looking at her face today, time has been kind to her. Among Hong Kong actresses, who doesn’t adore Chiu Shu-ching?
