Funny Ghost 1989 Film Review: The Ghost in the Porcelain Cup

Film Name: Funny Ghost / 猛鬼撞鬼

Films from the 1980s bear the hallmarks of their era—from the sets and plots to the slightly tacky humor. What were childhood horror movies for many now come across as comedies. Sandra Ng was already a leading lady back then, delivering many standout performances in the film, including scenes where she played multiple roles. But the supporting cast—Charlie Tso, Alan Tam, and Lau Nam-kwong—was also a highlight. The scene where Charlie Tso and Alan Tam battle ghosts in red underwear, along with the four dancers also clad in red lingerie fighting spirits…

The plot is straightforward: a triad boss procures two porcelain cups through a witch, each containing a female ghost and her son. Aru (Sandra Ng), a heavily indebted dancer, accidentally obtains one, drawing the boss’s pursuit. He dispatches Lau Nam-kwong to retrieve it. Meanwhile, the police investigate the case and follow the lead to Ah Yu, dispatching the comedic detective duo Charlie Tso and Sammi Chan. As the group scrambles for the porcelain cups, they shatter, releasing the female ghost. All internal conflicts cease as they unite against the spirit. The ghost first possesses the gang leader, then the police chief.
