Film Name: 妈妈咪鸭 / Duck Duck Goose

A quintessential road movie, yet one filled with the dramatic ups and downs of joy and sorrow, partings and reunions. While some of the sad farewells feel slightly forced, the moments of reunion remain heartwarming enough.

A classic American character arc unfolds as a solitary goose embarks on a rugged migration journey accompanied by two hungry ducklings. Through this journey, he transforms from aloofness to humility, from selfishness to responsibility, and from ignorance of love to understanding compassion.

Rather than Dapeng being the male goose forced into the role of “mother duck,” it’s more accurate to say that this “mother duck” is the one truly being cared for. Though he was once the most formidable, unbeatable pilot, and though in good health he could single-handedly challenge vicious wildcats, loneliness remains an indelible psychological shadow he can never shake. This shadow acts like a shell, enveloping him and stifling his inner growth.

Indeed, this animation tells the story of how two ducklings act as emotional mothers, warming an adult and healing a wounded heart. Though they lack powerful wings, sturdy legs, or imposing builds, they possess genuine affection for mutual comfort and reliance, an innate capacity to give love, and something called “home” that Dapeng had never truly experienced. Thus, though small and sometimes timid, their emotions are whole, confident, and powerful. It was these two ducklings who peeled away the shadow shrouding Dapeng’s heart, enabling him to truly grow into an adult—a hero.

The film’s greatest achievement lies in its full exploration of the interactions between Dapeng and the two ducklings, allowing their bond to develop and deepen. This is an aspect most domestic animations overlook. “Big Fish & Begonia” attempts to depict the girl’s emotional connection with Kun, yet barely allows them to share meaningful moments in human form—how could such a bond possibly form? “T-Guardians” aims to portray toys caring for their owner, yet constantly has the toys soloing through game levels. How can any genuine bond between them and their owner develop? At the very least, the bond between Big Panda and the two ducklings is grounded in sufficient screen time, making it believable and relatively rich.

The film’s problem lies in the protagonist’s monotonous and uninteresting challenges. A wild cat that can never be shaken off not only lacks depth but also fails to evolve. Setting aside the oddity of the old cat having two personalities and two voices—which serves little purpose—its cockroach-like immortality is downright irritating.

By contrast, the encounter with the hen and the night spent together feels quite fresh. The hen allows Dapeng to experience a form of love transcending species. Though his first instinct is to flee, this seed is planted within him. The depiction of Dapeng’s fear of darkness and enclosed spaces, preventing him from entering the cave, is vividly portrayed. There, he genuinely becomes the object of care for two little ducklings. When they witness the cave’s wondrous firefly display, Dapeng overcomes his previous fears. The unique joy of confronting once-feared challenges also takes root within him.

In truth, as Big Eagle steadily dispels the shadows of loneliness, rejection, and avoidance within his heart, he encounters diverse people and challenges. The film should focus precisely on how he gradually learns true courage and compassion through these varied experiences, rather than constantly relying on a mysterious old cat to drive the plot and test his growth.
