Film Name: 重案组 / Crime Story / 重案組

The film is adapted from a real-life Hong Kong kidnapping case (the Wong Tak-fai Kidnapping Case), and director Wong Chi-keung gained widespread acclaim with this work, earning the moniker “The Beast” well. Jackie Chan stars as a righteous cop who requires psychological therapy after shooting a criminal. His adversary is the ruthless corrupt cop, Uncle Hong, played by “Fat Cat” Cheng Chee-shih. The plot is straightforward: Uncle Hong leads a gang in kidnapping the wealthy Huang Yifei. The story unfolds as Jackie unravels the kidnapping scheme orchestrated by Uncle Hong. Of course, Jackie remains fearless as ever. However, this film eschews his signature comedic flair, and he isn’t invincible. During the investigation, he’s thoroughly outmaneuvered by Hong Ye, even enduring a humiliating scene where Hong Ye’s henchmen force him to kiss them while holding his head—a deeply unsettling act of degradation. Sam Tsang, portraying Hong Ye, truly excels in his role as the villain.
Under director Wong Chi-keung’s direction, the film maintains a relentless tension throughout. Jackie endures helplessness while clinging to his quest for justice, while Cheng Ze-shi embodies a chilling, ruthless menace, perpetually anxious that his schemes might be exposed.
When Jackie sheds his comedic hero persona, unleashing raw, gritty fists in a visceral, unhinged performance, the result is this outstanding “Crime Story.”
This film also marks Jackie Chan’s sole collaboration with Wong Chi-keung, the director who later broke into Hollywood. Even this partnership ended on sour terms. Chan vehemently opposed Wong’s inclusion of bloody violence and sexual elements in the film. The violent passion scene between Cheng and Ng Wing-mei in the elevator truly clashed with Chan’s signature cinematic style. This collaboration ultimately left Wong Chi-keung harboring resentment toward Jackie. Rumors later circulated that Wong Jing’s film “High Risk” was secretly co-directed with Wong Chi-keung as a satirical jab at Jackie. Coincidentally, Wong Jing and Jackie’s only collaboration, “City Hunter,” also ended on bad terms.
Regardless, “Crime Story” undoubtedly offers a glimpse of a different side of Jackie Chan.
