Film Name: 偷情先生 / City Squeeze

Halfway through the film, it becomes clear where that particular gag originated. The opening scenes—hailing taxis, squeezing onto buses, exchanging change—had already appeared repeatedly in early Hong Kong cinema, as they were products of that specific era. The scene where James Wong gets caught on a public speaker while using the restroom is a direct rip-off of the classic gag from the Western parody comedy The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! The sequence where Li Mei-feng helps Sammi Cheng sober up is a straight copy of the chicken-cooking scene from the classic Hong Kong comedy The Private Eyes. Lan Zi’s breast enlargement device also shares similarities with the breast enlargement device in the later film “Front Page.” Throughout the film, only the three instances where the protagonists fall into potholes on the road represent genuinely timely social commentary—a quintessentially Wong Bak-ming touch. The closing credits even specially acknowledge “Mr. Wong Bak-ming for script consultation.” All other gags are borrowed material, a common tactic in Gao Zhi-sen’s comedies at the time. Early Golden Harvest films were cobbled together from various international sources, with screenwriters sent to major film festivals to observe foreign productions and document amusing scenes. One notable exception: while Uncle Chan dislikes Fatty in the film, off-screen he genuinely adored her. He openly shared this affection multiple times on “Celebrity Talk Show,” though Fatty consistently rejected his advances.
