Brotherhood 1986 Film Review: More than just “A Better Tomorrow” – it’s a bond of brotherhood.

Film Name: 兄弟 / Brotherhood

Lately, for some reason, I’ve suddenly become obsessed with movies starring Li Xiu Xian. One day, while watching “The Law Enforcer” on LeTV, I suddenly noticed a line below it that read, “More brotherly love than ‘A Better Tomorrow’.” The title was this film, “Brotherhood.” I became very interested in it and took the time to watch the entire movie.

Released in 1986—the same year as “A Better Tomorrow”—both films explore brotherhood. Yet this one never achieved the same popularity, grossing only about seven million yuan at the box office. Still, I find it every bit as compelling as “A Better Tomorrow.”

In the film, Li Xiu Xian and Wan Zi Liang both start as police officers. After Wan Zi Liang clashes with his superior, he resigns in anger. Later, during a robbery case, Li Xiu Xian discovers Wan Zi Liang is one of the robbers… The ending is tragic. It’s a rare gem of a film.

At the time, this film earned both Li Xiu Xian and Wan Zi Liang nominations for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards respectively. Ultimately, Chow Yun-fat won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for “A Better Tomorrow,” while Ti Lung claimed the Golden Horse Award for Best Actor for the same film.

If comparing this film to “A Better Tomorrow,” I can only say: they’re incomparable.

But it must be said—this movie is truly captivating.
