Film Name: 我的世界大電影 / A Minecraft Movie

Just got back from watching the movie, here’s my takeaway: “A Minecraft Movie” (Minecraft, hereinafter referred to as ‘Minecraft’) is a very standard, assembly-line-style “cross-IP adaptation” commercial film—including but not limited to adaptations from games, anime, novels, and short films—efficient, streamlined, and formulaic, with even its strengths and weaknesses being strikingly similar.

At first, I thought the film was mediocre, but at least it had some interesting highlights. However, upon reflection, I realized that nearly all the interesting aspects of the film stemmed from the gameplay, settings, and ideas of the Minecraft game itself. Once these elements are stripped away, the remaining original content is rather lackluster, and the plot logic and character relationships are even quite disastrous…

Realizing this, my evaluation of Minecraft inevitably dropped another notch. Even as a game adaptation film with no expectations, it is quite poor.

To be clear, I am not a Minecraft player; I only watched some game videos years ago, so I have no particular attachment to it. The adaptation of the film would not have any additional positive or negative impact on me.

Perhaps precisely because of this, when I saw the “Main World” in the film, I still felt a sense of freshness from “exploring an unknown world,” especially the parts where you collect surrounding elements to obtain materials and engage in self-built construction and forging.

Building defensive fortresses during zombie sieges, creating weapons by combining personal items with raw materials, and partially recreating props/scenes using real-life characters—these elements all have a certain game-like charm.

To put it bluntly, most of the fun in Minecraft comes from this—whether you’re a player or not, you can experience that DIY novelty and joy… Unfortunately, there aren’t many such scenes in the film. If it had been more abundant and fully realized according to the game’s philosophy, the film might have been even better.

However, we’re talking about a movie here, and I understand that commercial films must have a main plotline and numerous characters. Using the “completely self-created open-world” spirit of the game to make a movie is still a bit too avant-garde.

Nevertheless, the story and characters in “Minecraft” are far from ideal… Let me put it this way: the character designs in the film are acceptable, such as Jack Black’s arrogant, Kung Fu Panda-style Steve, and Jason Momoa’s gamer-turned-fake-tough-guy version of “Trash Hero” Garrison, which are actually good ideas. However, the actual on-screen execution feels hollow and underwhelming.

Steve, who escapes from reality, is fine in terms of character motivation and behavior, but in the key plot points involving Margot, he is very childish, focusing on saying one thing and believing another, then turning around and opposing it. The conflict setup is unnecessarily simplistic and juvenile.

Garrison’s growth and the changes in his relationships with Henry, Steve, and others are a complete mess. Audiences can’t feel any emotional resonance between them; they just see a few people arguing about their own business one moment and suddenly willing to risk their lives for each other the next…

In short, it’s a hastily trimmed version of a conventional adventure story template, with no real effort put into it… … In comparison, I’m starting to think that the 2018 “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” looks more polished. While that film also has simple characters and a straightforward story, it feels much more natural and fluid.

However, I did find a small surprise in “Minecraft”: Jennifer Coolidge’s portrayal of Vice Principal Marlene, who develops a connection with the “villagers” who have entered the real world.

This “auntie” is best known for her role as Tanya in the TV series “The White Lotus: Sicily” (for which she won an Emmy Award), a wealthy woman who is a bit confused yet shrewd, with a mix of innocence and cuteness. Her role in the “Minecraft” movie shares some similarities with that character, This character collides with the “villagers” in Minecraft, who are always wandering around, seeming innocent yet mischievous, creating an unexpectedly strange and magical chemistry.

Of course, this side plot doesn’t change the fact that Minecraft as a whole is underwhelming…

I hope Hollywood creators will take some time to reflect and stop casually messing with already established IPs.
