Film Name: 一妻两夫 / One Husband Too Many / 一妻兩夫

What do women really want? This is a question Freud never fully grasped before his death. I’m genuinely curious—do women themselves even have an answer? Chen You certainly doesn’t. Whether it’s artists who’ve squandered their fortunes on the arts or advertising designers riding high on success (Xu Anhua’s name is clearly a jab), in front of this seasoned master, Zhong Chuhong, they’re all just weaklings. Why is she the only one so strong? The setup was clear from the start: she’s neither the insecure, starved-out damsel like Anita Mui craving material security, nor the spoiled housewife like Xia Wenxi seeking emotional companionship. She’s practically divine. Of course, both ex-wives made their own choices—each pursuing what they lacked, or what their husbands couldn’t provide.
Chung Chu-hung is different. Her characterization aligns far more closely with Western female values. Financially independent, owning villas and cars. Spiritually fulfilled, as she joined the Shakespearean drama club purely for passion. She utterly outshines both types of traditional Chinese men. And these two archetypes encompass nearly all men: either spiritually rich beyond measure yet incapable of managing material affairs, or materially wealthy beyond measure yet incapable of managing family life. Both men are swiftly rendered bewildered and resort to violence. The details make it clear that Sister Hong is fond of Chung Chun-t’ao, and she explicitly states this in the end. But liking him doesn’t stop her from sleeping around.
The relationship between these two cousins is also ambiguous, with a history of taking turns in previous marriages. Ultimately, it’s Guo Jingming’s line from “Tiny Times 1.0” that sums it up best: love without material foundation is like sand—it doesn’t even need Chung Chun-t’ao’s song to blow it away; it scatters after just a few steps. This choice involved almost no hesitation. He was truly a scumbag, but this scumbag persona of Chu Hong actually reflects Chen You’s view of independent women. So the inevitable outcome was being played until she was broken. Chen You, this supposed spiritual representative, lost his spirit. What about material wealth? Imagine if Sammi and Chu Hong had continued down this path. Chung Tse-tung would meet the same fate, perhaps even worse. He’d lose most of his material wealth too. In short, once Sister Hong stops loving you, you’re still left with the same outcome. But men are such fools—new suitors will always come, willing to follow in each other’s footsteps for her. As the line from The Final Master puts it: “A man’s money is just there to be swindled by women, isn’t it?”
