Money Crazy 1977 Film Review: Money makes you feel cold all over.

Film Name: 发钱寒 / Money Crazy / 發錢寒

During John Woo’s early years of struggling to make it big, though he couldn’t film the passionate martial arts world and chivalrous society he envisioned,
he still effortlessly crafted these biting social satires.
The outstanding performances by Yiu-han Ng and Kwan-ying Hui, the lovely charm of Yee-chi Chiu, and the catchy theme song and insert songs transformed this small comedy into a blockbuster that became the year’s box office champion.
Many subtle details deserve praise: Uncle Kit’s attitude toward diamonds and friends, the role of Zhang Ying’s personal assistant, the caricatured personality of enforcer Li Haisheng, the foreigner’s work ethic, and the teasing of Hsü Kuan-wen. The golden age of Hong Kong cinema was already taking shape, and its later rise to prominence as the Hollywood of the East was no accident.

Money makes you restless; with cash, you’re itching to roll; without it, you shiver in the cold. That a modest comedy could reflect such profound truths proved it didn’t tarnish the Xu Brothers’ comedic legacy.
