Devoted To You 1986 Film Review: A Young Girl’s Thoughts

Film Name: 痴心的我 / Devoted To You / Then Nice Two Coutles

Jacky Cheung has now reached the age of understanding his destiny. With an impeccable reputation, a career that brings both fame and fortune, a beautiful and happy family, and an easygoing and genuine personality, what envy his fans most is that the one who has always stood by the God of Song through thick and thin is “Devoted To You”—May Lo Mei-wai.

Without watching “Devoted To You,” one could never grasp just how stunning May’s beauty is that could keep an older man so devoted and infatuated. From a purely cinematic perspective, however, the female lead who captivated me most was Li Lijun. Her eyes were truly beautiful and expressive, and her tomboyish personality, though rebellious to the extreme, was utterly endearing. Especially in that moment when the motorcycle guy glances at the cheering girls, Li Lijun radiates an otherworldly elegance. Next to her, Ah May seems rather ordinary—just your average girl next door.

Truthfully, Ah Zhen’s parents loved her most. Though they constantly praised their younger son for being so sensible, their deepest concern always lay with Ah Zhen. The film repeatedly depicts the parents’ earnest efforts—consulting fortune-tellers to save Ah Zhen—revealing their profound parental devotion. Though her father appears strict, he’s deeply anxious about his daughter’s well-being. When she collapses in distress, he rushes her indoors without further questioning. Ah Zhen’s mother, played by the wife of veteran Hong Kong actor Tsang Kong (who appeared in “Flower Grandpa”), Jiao Jiao, possesses a gentle and subdued nature. She is utterly powerless to cope with her daughter’s turbulent adolescence, enduring her daughter’s demands and arrogance without complaint. Even when knocked to the ground by her daughter, she utters not a single word of reproach. When her daughter dragged her weary body to lie at the doorstep, the mother’s heart instantly melted—a testament to the greatness of maternal love.

Ah Zhen was actually quite fragile, perhaps even more lost than fragile. Why go to school? What was the meaning of life? Could loving someone really be so casual? Then one day, her deeply beloved boyfriend was beaten to a bloody pulp right before her eyes, and she could do nothing. That fleeting romance finally faded away with the departure of her beloved. After the agony came the calm of daily life. As her heart settled, everything grew clearer and more transparent. Rising to find her school uniform, life began anew. In that moment, all was forgiven.

Ah May grew up in a privileged home. Her father, a school board member, doted excessively—anything his daughter did was right, and the school was always at fault. Her beautiful mother obeyed her every whim, showering her with care. Yet none of this could prevent her daughter’s rebellion. Instead, she preferred to hang out with the wild girls, fooling around and acting crazy—a carefree existence. Beautiful love can cloud the mind, peck out the eyes. How could a token belong to two people? How could her boyfriend treat her as just a friend? It was all her own wishful thinking. What else could she do but leave? I deeply admire Ah May’s composure and sincerity while waiting at the airport. Behind her laughter and release lies the hidden bitterness of first love.

The young classmate is truly endearing—his gentlemanly concern for Ah May, his thoughtful care toward women, his proper speech and manners. What girl wouldn’t be charmed? First love benefits a girl’s growth; only after experiencing it can she learn to discern someone worthy of her affection—a responsible man.

The film itself has its flaws, but it’s a solid drama with significant social value. It offers thoughtful exploration into the psychology of adolescent girls and the methods of raising children.
