Handsome Siblings 1992 Film Review: Brigitte Lin’s 1992

Film Name: 绝代双骄 / Handsome Siblings / 絕代雙驕

Just from the poster, you can tell this movie was made purely for Brigitte Lin. And the best part of the film is the portrayal of her captivating beauty—everything else is sheer absurdity.
1992 was the most glorious year for Brigitte Lin. That year, the enchantress had reached the age of 38—

Swordsman II: The Invincible East—as The Invincible East
The Deer and the Cauldron II: The Dragon Cult – Long’er
The Two Heroes – Hua Wuwei
The New Dragon Inn – Qiu Moyan
Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land – Yun Zhi Fan

All others are renowned, yet this one is rarely mentioned or performed. It turns out this film is simply too vulgar. . The entire film reeks of bad taste, featuring clumsy acting, a crude script, and chaotic logic. Though it occasionally boasts lavish set pieces, it often descends into petty, pointless slapstick—too steeped in vulgarity…

After watching, I asked myself: Should I keep this awful movie on disc? Yes, because Brigitte Lin is breathtakingly beautiful. Many iconic images were actually captured from this film. Her charm speaks for itself—no acting required. Just her smile, just her turn, and the camera captures such radiant beauty. Who cares about the trashy plot? Her mere presence satisfies me…

Movies fall into two categories: those watched for the story and those for the actors. Story-wise, this one fails utterly. As for the actors, cross-dressing is typically Lin’s forte. Unfortunately, her character here is both dim-witted and affected. Playing a naive young girl newly entering the martial arts world at the ripe age of thirty-eight creates a jarring disconnect with her actual persona. She lacks both the worldly wisdom and composure of Eastern Blossom, and the cool reserve of Qiu Moyan. Her martial spirit is merely superficial window dressing, her mind consumed by romantic entanglements. That year, Lin had officially split from Qin Han and met Xing Liyuan in September—a period of emotional limbo. How could she authentically portray such romantic longing? No wonder even Xiao Yu found her affection lacking… Performance-wise, this film is also a failure.

This film, a double failure in both story and execution, merits five stars only if you admire Brigitte Lin’s cross-dressing performance and view it as a documentary capturing her peerless elegance. Otherwise, skip it.
