My Sassy Hubby 2012 Film Review: Choices at the Ten-Year Itch

Film Name: 我老公不靠谱 / My Sassy Hubby / 我老婆唔够秤II:我老公唔生性

The film opens with a montage of scenes from the original movie released ten years ago. Each photograph projected onto the screen instantly evokes its corresponding plot point. I honestly can’t recall how many times I’ve watched the first “My Wife Is 18.” So much so that today, years later, I found myself deeply immersed in the sequel. I left the theater with tear-swollen eyes and a face contorted from laughter.

Compared to the first film, the presence of Wong Cho-lam truly elevates the experience. This man who constantly yells at his sharp-tongued wife—I believe he embodies the very essence of this film. His wife is undeniably dim-witted—constantly forgetting things when she goes out, acting like a total airhead, and even attending that ridiculous “Lady Gua Gua” concert. But when Ekin Cheng asks why such a dim-witted wife would be with such a sharp-tongued man, it turns out women aren’t stupid when it comes to choosing husbands. Honestly, this pair of Ekin’s outrageous neighbors is both hilarious and genuinely endearing.

As for Ekin Cheng, I can only say he’s no longer the handsome, refined young man who once captivated me. But in this drama about the 10-year itch, this aging process feels like a natural, authentic portrayal. Especially when Ekin encounters the student Zheng Xin Yi, flashbacks instantly flood his mind to the younger days of Ruby Lin co-starring with him in “July Rhapsody.” It instantly evokes a flood of emotions. In these ten years, Ah Sa has gained a more womanly charm, shedding the delicate, flat-chested girl-next-door look of her youth. Yet she remains the Ah Sa I adore. In this film, she’s still as childish and willful as ever, unchanged over the decade. It wasn’t until love poisoned her and she needed a reset that she finally agreed to cook for Zheng, making him his favorite tiramisu. To me, this truly reveals Ah Sa’s essence as a lover—because she mirrors the person I once was: childish, willful, endlessly mischievous, blindly falling for someone yet refusing to admit it to herself, utterly unaware of how she’d lost her own identity…

When Old Zheng accepted New Cai’s birthday invitation that night only to flip her off at the end, while A Sa accepted Sweet Potato’s ring, my memories flooded back. Just like Old Zheng’s psychology thesis he couldn’t finish for eight years, as a woman, I admit men find women’s hearts truly unfathomable. But what does it matter whether you fathom them or not? I’ve always believed that if he truly loves you, he’ll put his heart into it and hold on to you. So even if love brings tolerance, sweetness, and passion—or even arguments, misunderstandings, and despair—no matter what, I now believe more than ever: what’s meant to end will prove itself through its conclusion, while what’s meant to last forever needs no proof.

For me, I watched this “10-Year Itch” with a mix of nostalgia, guilt, sweetness, and melancholy. A film that evokes such complex feelings—and one that serves as such a successful sequel to one of my all-time favorite movies—deserves nothing less than five stars. I honestly can’t think of a more fitting rating.

It reminds me of booking couple tickets for Chen Sheng’s concert back then. Ten years later—or perhaps a few years from now—will there be a third installment?

Oh, and catching up with Zhang Yiwei was a real pleasure.

I hope you’ll find time to watch this film too.
