Fractured Follies 1988 Film Review: Short Review

Film Name: 长短脚之恋 / Fractured Follies / 長短腳之戀

Short Review 1: Lighthearted Comedy

I must say Joey Wong is truly stunning. In this film, though Michelle Reis has an excellent figure, she still can’t overshadow Joey Wong’s pure and radiant beauty. Chow Yun-fat radiates pure joy throughout the movie. Watching the final outtakes, you can see him kiss Joey Wong multiple times during the last kissing scene—which makes you appreciate how carefree Big Brother Chow can be. This film is a lighthearted comedy filled with countless suggestive moments, whether through dialogue or actions. Some crowd scenes, like the one soliciting business outside a supermarket, feel a bit chaotic, and several actors appear somewhat unnatural. Still, it’s perfect for year-end viewing—light, humorous, and not lacking in genuine emotion.

Short Review 2: Telling Love Through Story

Classic romantic films built their narratives around love, with logical progression and visible character development.

Today’s romances often reverse this order—love drives the plot. This inverted structure and logic explain why modern love stories lack that genuine, uplifting “flavor” of romance.

Another point I’d like to make: one thing I truly love about classic Hong Kong cinema is its “comedic timing”—or rather, the way it unexpectedly triggers emotional shifts in the audience. While there’s setup, there’s also surprise. Achieving this effect requires immense creativity to pull off.
