Sworn Brothers 1987 Film Review: Brothers in Arms: The Underworld Chronicles

Film Name: 肝胆相照 / Sworn Brothers / 肝膽相照

Highlights: Depicting profound brotherhood and underworld conflicts, Andy Lau and Anthony Cheung deliver a seamless performance with genuine emotion.

“Sworn Brothers” is a film centered on brotherly bonds and gang warfare. The story follows two protagonists—Ah Kwok and Ah Ting—who respectively embody a righteous police officer and a gangster, yet their relationship is far more complex than these roles suggest.

Uncle Bao, a retired police officer, has two sons: his biological son Ah Kwok and his adopted son Ah Ding. Ah Kwok, played by Tony Leung, formerly served as an Interpol officer and now works as an inspector in Hong Kong. Ah Ding, portrayed by Andy Lau, is deeply entrenched in the underworld. Though he earns the admiration and substantial income from his boss, Yang Donghai, he refuses to engage in drug trafficking, placing Yang in a difficult position. Though the brothers share a bond as close as blood, they keep their professional lives separate. As the plot unfolds, Ah Kwok is ordered to investigate Yang Donghai’s gang, while Ah Ding falls victim to Yang Donghai’s feigned injury ploy, forcing him to interact with drug traffickers and igniting a bloody conflict. This turmoil not only tests the brothers’ loyalty but also lays bare the underworld’s brutality and the police force’s commitment to justice. Amidst the turmoil, A Ding’s girlfriend Wen Wen repeatedly risked her life for him, demonstrating profound devotion.

By the film’s conclusion, A Ding chooses to flee overseas alone to evade trouble, leaving behind his beloved Wen Wen and A Guo, whom he regarded as a brother. This underworld feud brought misfortune to many, even claiming the lives of A Ding and A Guo’s enemies within the police force. During Ah Guo’s pursuit of Ah Ding, Ah Ding narrowly escapes, but Ah Guo faces disciplinary action from the police force. Yang Donghai’s conspiracy is exposed, and his gang receives severe legal punishment. Yet behind it all lies a heavy toll—the brotherhood between Ah Ding and Ah Guo is severely tested by this conflict.

“Sworn Brothers” unfolds like an epic tale of the underworld, brimming with tense action and profound brotherhood. The seamless chemistry between Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu-wai powerfully conveys the emotional bond between these brothers. Though the plot may feel somewhat familiar, the actors’ masterful performances and the director’s nuanced handling elevate this film into a worthwhile viewing experience. Andy Lau’s performance stands out, masterfully portraying a character entangled in the underworld yet driven by justice, evoking both sympathy and respect from the audience. With its fast-paced rhythm and genuine emotional depth, this film remains a timeless classic worthy of revisiting.
