Film Name: 熊出没·重启未来 / Boonie Bears: Future Reborn

This is a fairly standard production. It incorporates sci-fi elements alongside environmental themes, blending real-world tourism settings with fantastical future worlds. New characters are introduced while the ultimate boss remains shrouded in mystery. Yet with so many “both…and” elements, the work inevitably skims the surface of its intended portrayals, failing to focus deeply or resonate emotionally.

The Bear Story film series primarily follows two core narrative threads: familial bonds and friendships, often complemented by an imaginative world. Across the past 11 installments, the protagonists’ personal family dynamics have consistently delivered the most compelling moments. Memorable examples include the emotional connection between Strongman and his father in “The Metamorphosis,” as well as the bond between Bear Brothers and their robotic mother.

In contrast, most Bear Story plots—including “Reboot the Future”—follow a formula: introduce a new character, explore their family dynamics, then weave in a conspiracy or mystery involving their relatives. This approach increasingly distances the audience. Viewers are most familiar with and invested in the adventures of Xiong Da, Xiong Er, and Strong Bald, and their interactions with those closest to them. Audiences hold little interest in the interactions between secondary characters or their peripheral connections. In other words, finding a girlfriend for Strong Head or even Bear Big would be far more compelling than telling the story of some random boy from the future.

In contrast, the Boonie Bears film series has consistently excelled in crafting imaginative worlds. The spore realm in Reboot the Future is a particularly convincing example. The Earth King Spore, the Destruction Spore, the Petrification Spore, and the myriad other fantastical spores of various shapes and functions are dazzling to behold.

However, a defining trait of Chinese animation is its strength in depicting nature and weakness in portraying human culture. The Sky City where humans survive thus feels less plausible. In post-apocalyptic settings, humans typically inhabit either bleak, desolate primitive cities or heavily guarded, technologically advanced artificial metropolises. While this future city appears to be the latter, it ultimately fails to deliver a truly sci-fi feel.

One relatively progressive aspect of the film is its attempt to explore the relationship between heroes and the masses. The hero’s actions inspire the people’s awakening, leading them to join forces and help operate the light cannon. A slight disappointment lies in Xiaoliang ultimately hoping Bald Qiang would use the reagent to save himself rather than charging headlong to save the world. This diminishes his heroic stature.

In reality, while Strong Bald is the protagonist of the Boonie Bears films, Xiao Liang is the central figure in the “Reboot the Future” storyline. He should be the one to accomplish the most heroic feat. This act of heroism might not be the triumphant moment of finally destroying the Earth King Spore, but rather the self-sacrificing foundation-laying gesture that enables others to succeed. In this sense, it might have been more effective to have Xiao Liang sacrifice himself alongside the city lord, while leaving the task of inserting the reagent to Strong Bald.

Because audiences know Strong Bald cannot possibly die. Thus, the suspense surrounding his potential resurrection at the film’s end is essentially a false dilemma. Xiao Liang, however, presents a different story—his potential revival remains entirely unknown to viewers, heightening the sense of suspense.

Another theme of the film is “trust,” a precious emotion between people. It is precisely because future humans lack trust that they cannot solve the spore problem. Bald Strong uses the scientific efficacy of his reagent to restore people’s faith in science, yet the film lacks a pivotal moment of awakening trust between individuals. All their discussions revolve around whether the reagent works—no one truly contemplates whether they should trust Xiao Liang as a person. Just as Xiong Da, Xiong Er, and Bald Strong can trust each other implicitly, what the people of Future City truly lack is that fundamental sense of trust where you can turn your back on someone and know they won’t stab you.

If the future could be restarted, I hope it would be a story about rebuilding trust. Xiaoliang lost his life, yet his sacrifice allowed the people of Future City to forge trust. Strong Bald Head earned the trust of Xiong Da, Xiong Er, Xiaoliang, and the citizens of Future City, yet lost the trust of his real-world boss. That would make for a truly fascinating conclusion.
