Film Name: 大鬧西遊 / Monkey Magic / Adventure in Journey to the West
When it comes to Journey to the West, a classic IP known to everyone in China, countless filmmakers have adapted and utilized this theme, with varying degrees of success. However, as more and more works based on this theme emerge, the public has begun to experience some aesthetic fatigue. Director Ma Xihai’s “Monkey Magic” deserves credit for daring to tackle this theme, demonstrating the team’s courage. It stands apart from previous adaptations in both narrative structure and world-building. The character design is particularly intriguing, featuring two distinct “Sun Wukong” figures: a meditating, overweight Great Sage and Sun Wuyuan from the toy world. Their conflicting goals spark an amusing tale as they strive toward their respective objectives.
Sun Wuyuan from the toy world is the protagonist. To prove his worth and enter the Journey to the West universe, he begins a master-disciple journey with the real Sun Wukong. The production team has put considerable effort into this film, meticulously crafting both grand scenes and minor characters, ensuring a clean and refined visual aesthetic throughout. As seen in the accompanying images, Sun Wuyuan’s fur is rendered with remarkable clarity. The film’s 3D visuals are outstanding, showcasing the continuous progress in Chinese animation production—a commendable achievement.
After discussing the protagonist, the antagonist must be addressed. The Bull Demon King emerges as the Great Sage’s adversary, coveting the Great Sage’s status for ages. To reclaim the Bull Clan’s position, he incites Sun Wuyuan to steal the Golden Monkey Staff. Yet the Bull Demon King isn’t entirely villainous; alongside his wicked schemes, he harbors an artist’s dream. Against backdrops of mountains and rivers, or volcanic eruptions, he sketches artfully rendered scenes.
Overall, the film boasts high completeness. Its humorous moments flow naturally, and the use of dialect adds charm while remaining accessible to children’s comprehension and worldview. This makes it particularly suitable for family viewing. However, certain plot details could use refinement. For instance, Sun Wuyuan’s growth arc could incorporate moments of ideological awakening, perhaps guided by the Old Immortal’s advice: “Don’t settle for mediocrity; make the world less boring.” Currently, this feels overly sentimental and didactic, failing to elevate the core theme. We look forward to more animated works that not only boast excellent production values but also deliver satisfying narratives.
