Film Name: 惡獸 / E Shou
It’s clear the plot avoids some common tropes found in domestic dramas, with its use of memes kept in check—never reaching the point of annoyance. A major highlight of the film is its special effects; both character and monster modeling are impressive, approaching the top tier of animated films I’ve seen. The weakness lies clearly in the narrative structure. The story’s transitions feel forced, particularly when it comes to character motivations during plot twists. These moments fail to resonate with the audience, giving the impression that the writers were simply ticking boxes and cutting corners. This narrative disjoint becomes increasingly apparent towards the end, culminating in a confession scene so jarringly abrupt it feels like it was tacked on. I believe cutting the dialogue entirely and simply showing a meaningful glance during the final victory would have sufficed. Action sequences are where domestic animation truly shines, prioritizing pure spectacle. This goal is achieved brilliantly, showcasing the potential of Chinese animation. Had the plot delved deeper into character motivations, it would have significantly enhanced immersion.
